CI Ladies Munster Champs!
There were scenes of great jubilation in Garryduff last Saturday when CI Ladies won the Munster Senior Cup for the first time since 1978. The all important goal came from Rebecca Sweetnam in the first period of extra time.
In what proved to be a very exciting final played on front of a large crowd in Garryduff CI had the better of the first half exchanges and should have went in at least a goal up at the break. But credit must be given to a resoulute College defence who defended bravely as CI applied the pressure.
In the second half College came more into the game and for a 15 minute period dominated the game. CI had to call on their goal keeper Orla McCarthy to make a number of crucial saves.
But as the game wore on CI got back into the game and for the last 15 minutes they peppered the College goal. Chances were coming tick and fast but they could find no way past a stubborn College defence.
There was great drama in the closing minutes as CI had a sucession of penalty corners as the final whistle blew. But Jenifer Hales could not find the target and extra time beckoned.
The game was decided in the 6th minute of extra time when another CI attack led to a scramble in the College circle. Young Rebecca Sweetnam managed to keep her head and slot home the winner from close range.
The CI captain Sandra Hackett received the cup from the Munster President John Rose and then the party started!
